Presentation on Sorority Research

I recently have been fortunate to be able to present my recent research “Brunch So Hard” about sorority women and their experiences with alcohol and fraternity men. I was hosted by Holmes Murphy to present my forthcoming publication in Oracle: The Research Journal of Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors. The full title is “Brunch So Hard: Liquid Boding and Unspoken Rules through Alcohol Use in National Panhellenic Conference Sorority Women” and this research used the descriptive psychological phenomenological method and was informed by poststructural feminism to better understand experiences of National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) sorority women with fraternity men and alcohol use. The findings suggest that members were unapologetic about their purveyance of alcohol-related behaviors. They embraced social behaviors illustrated in this study which they perceived as empowering in liberating them from the influence of male patriarchy. Chapter leadership often used alcohol to construct a system of gendered hegemony which heavily indoctrinated new members and created liminality for Women of Color. Implications for practice were framed by suggestions for alcohol misuse and wellness. This is part of a forthcoming trilogy related to sorority women. The second will be about alcohol use and the third will be about their mental health. I am excited for my reseach to be published over the next year and become more available and accessible to everyone.
