Recent Media Relations About Hazing & Mental Health

My research over the last several years has expanded beyond substance misuse to explore the nuances between gender and how alcohol use intersects with a spectrum of other student life challenges such as mental health and hazing.

This summer I was asked to comment on a number of media stories related to athletics and mental health. This was a result of my most recent collaborative article with Dr. Shelley Price-Williams (Northern Iowa) and one of my former students, Brianna McCarthy (University of Louisville). In this article which appears in the College Student Affairs Journal and entitled “In My Feelings: Division I Student-Athletes Seeking Mental Health Support.” I spoke with the Orange County Registrar about student-athlete hazing and mental heath related to more recent allegations against a swimming coach at Stanford.

I also was featured in a Washington Post spotlight article about college student mental health as as reaction to a contagion of campus suicide attempts by student-athletes. Inside Higher Education also featured some of my research and expertise related to sorority hazing.
